Telemedicine & Veterinary Specialists
When your pet comes to Animal Health Center of Port St Lucie, he or she has access to leading veterinary specialists across the country. We use an advanced telemedicine system for consulting with specialists in a number of different fields. We consult with specialists on complex cases or when a confirmation of diagnosis might be helpful. Our telemedicine system and use of local board certified veterinarians in a number of specialties, such as neurology, orthopedics, dermatology, and internal medicine, allows for fast, accurate consultations when needed.

Microchipping Pet identification is a must! But a sturdy collar and ID tag may not be enough to ensure your pet returns home safely if he or she is lost. Microchipping your pet is a safe, effective way to help your pet make it home safe and sound.
	A microchip is about the size and shape of a grain of rice. It is implanted underneath your pet's skin between the shoulder blades during a process similar to a vaccination. Each microchip is encoded with unique information about your pet. This information corresponds to data in a national database. Veterinary hospitals and animal shelters across the country are equipped with special scanners capable of detecting and reading microchips. If your pet is lost, his or her microchip is scanned and the information is used to reunite you and your best friend.
Our Hospital uses an ISO microchip, which allows for easy travel into other countries and is easily registered on-line. Please ask our staff for more information about microchipping your pet.

Wellness Program
Preventive care is the key to keeping your pet healthy and happy. It is our goal to prevent illness whenever possible, and routine examinations and a complete preventive health care plan are the best ways to stop illness and disease before they affect your pet's quality of life. We strongly advise yearly wellness examinations for all pets. Since pets age approximately seven years for each human year, if you pet does not get check out yearly it’s like you not visiting your doctor for seven years. A lot can go wrong in that period of time.

Here at the Animal Health Center we provide a comprehensive wellness programs that is specifically designed for your pet's unique needs. We take into account factors such as your pet's age, lifestyle, and other risk factors when designing a wellness plan for your beloved companion. All wellness programs include a complete physical examination, testing for internal parasites, heartworm and flea control procedures, vaccinations, and specialized laboratory tests that aid in the prevention of disease.

A pet that appears healthy can often be hiding symptoms of disease. Routine blood testing helps our veterinarians learn things about your pet's health that cannot be spotted during a routine physical examination.

Abnormal values are often uncovered even when an exam is normal or when the client does not anticipate any problems with their pet, such as low thyroid, early-stage kidney or liver disease and anemia. Our extensive diagnostic laboratory provides information that is critical not only to a sick or injured pet, but for wellness purposes as well. We have access in both our in-house and reference laboratories to extensive diagnostic testing, allowing pets to receive appropriate treatment in a timely manner. Our laboratory is capable of processing numerous blood tests, including chemistry profiles, blood glucose and complete blood counts (CBC). We also process pre-anesthetic blood tests, which are often necessary before your pet undergoes anesthesia or surgery.

Vaccinations
Up-to-date vaccinations are the cornerstone of your pet's health care plan. Every pet is unique and so each pet has different needs when it comes to vaccinations. We work closely with you to develop a vaccine protocol for your pet based on his or her needs and lifestyle. We recommend annual vaccinating for distemper/parvo in dogs and panleukopenia in cats. We vaccinate based on each pet's individual needs so please ask our staff what is recommended for your pet.

Puppy And Kitten Care
We want to help welcome your new puppy or kitten into your home! The puppy/kitten years are a critical time in your pet's life. Vaccinations are particularly important and we create a vaccine protocol that is tailored specifically to your pet. Getting an early start on dental care is also a must. We help you start a dental routine for your pet that helps prevent periodontal disease and get him or her used to dental cleanings. We offer new puppy/kitten packages that can save you 25% when purchased at the first visit. Ask us about it when you come in for your visit.

We are proud to offer a special welcoming kit for new puppy and kitten owners filled with valuable health care information about your newest family member. This information helps you make informed decisions about the care and training of your new pet. Each kit also includes a free month of heartworm and/or flea prevention and other complimentary items. Senior Pet Care
Older pets make wonderful companions, and thanks to advances in veterinary medicine, pets are living longer than ever. Your senior pet has medical needs that are very different from puppies and kittens, though. Our Doctors works with you to develop a health care plan that ensures your pet is safe and happy throughout his or her "golden years".

Pets age faster than people and pets are considered to be "seniors" around age 7. Prevention is the key to keeping older pets healthy. Symptoms of disease or a chronic condition many not be readily apparent. In some cases, conditions that may look like the usual signs of "old age" could actually be signs of a more serious problem, such as arthritis, periodontal disease, kidney failure, cancer or cognitive dysfunction (senile dementia). We recommend all senior pets undergo a physical examination every six months to catch problems and treat them early. During an examination, we also perform a number of routine blood tests that can detect the signs of heart disease, heartworm infection, diabetes and other health problems.

You are an important ally in keeping your senior pet healthy! If your pet is experiencing any changes in behavior, we urge you to bring him or her in for a check-up. Together, we can make sure you and your faithful companion enjoy many more years together.

Pharmacy and Prescription Diets
Our complete in-house pharmacy gives you the benefit of starting your pet's medication as soon as you get home. We are stocked with a broad spectrum of pharmaceuticals used commonly in veterinary medicine that can help your pet recover from an illness or surgical procedure.

Prescriptions are often ready at check-out. Our trained staff is knowledgeable and gives instruction on appropriate administration techniques as well as daily recommended doses.

Many pets have dietary needs that can only be met by prescribed nutrition. Our hospital carries a number of prescription diets that are often part of a total health care plan for your pet. Our veterinary staff is able to tailor individual nutrition plans based on your pet's health needs.
